About Gene Conley

A towering 6-foot-8 right-hander, Gene Conley signed with the Boston Braves in 1950 after starring in both baseball and basketball at Washington State, and reached the majors in 1952. Over 11 big-league seasons (1952, 1954-63) with the Braves, Phillies, and Red Sox, he went 91-96 with a 3.82 ERA and 888 strikeouts. A four-time All-Star, Conley took the loss in the 1954 game but earned the win in the 1955 All-Star Game, and he was a member of the 1957 World Series champion Milwaukee Braves, making one relief appearance in the Series. In the minors he became the first player to win The Sporting News Minor League Player of the Year award twice (1951 with Hartford and 1953 with Toledo). Remarkably, Conley was also an NBA center who won three straight championships with the Boston Celtics (1959-61), making him the second athlete after Otto Graham to capture titles in two major American sports and one of the very few to play in both MLB and the NBA.
