1954 Topps #58 Bob Wilson

About Bob Wilson
The "Bob Wilson" on 1954 Topps #58 is Robert James "Red" Wilson, a red-haired catcher and the reason for his nickname; Topps carried him as both "Bob" and "Red" across the 1950s. A standout at the University of Wisconsin, he was Big Ten MVP as a football end in 1949 and pitched the Badgers to the 1950 College World Series before the Chicago White Sox signed him as an amateur free agent in 1950. Wilson reached the majors with the White Sox in 1951 and backed up Sherm Lollar; still a Chicagoan when this card was shot, he was dealt to the Detroit Tigers for Matt Batts in May 1954. He caught for Detroit through 1960 and finished with Cleveland, hitting .258 with 24 home runs and 189 RBI over 602 games (mostly behind the plate). His best year was 1958, when he batted .299, stole 10 bases, and caught Jim Bunning's July 20 no-hitter at Fenway Park, the last out a Ted Williams fly to Al Kaline. Wilson was elected to the Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame in 1990.
