About Harry Dorish

Signed by the Boston Red Sox after firing back-to-back no-hitters in high school, right-handed pitcher Harry "Fritz" Dorish climbed through the minors at Canton, Scranton and Louisville before losing time to World War II, when he served in the Army in the Pacific. He debuted for Boston on April 15, 1947, and pitched all or parts of ten major-league seasons (1947-56) with the Red Sox, St. Louis Browns, Chicago White Sox and Baltimore Orioles, working mostly out of the bullpen. His best years came in Chicago: in 1952 he led the American League in saves and posted a sparkling 2.47 ERA over 91 innings after manager Paul Richards taught him the "slip ball," and he followed with a strong 1953. Over 323 games Dorish went 45-43 with a 3.83 ERA, 48 saves and 332 strikeouts. On June 2, 1950, he became the last AL pitcher ever to steal home, on a double steal. After retiring he coached, serving as Boston's pitching coach in 1963 (helping shape reliever Dick Radatz) and for the Atlanta Braves (1968-71). He died in 2000.
