About Mel Roach

A Richmond, Virginia native and University of Virginia standout, Mel Roach signed with the Milwaukee Braves in July 1953 as a "bonus baby," reportedly for $40,000 — a deal that under the era's Bonus Rule forced the young infielder to spend his first two seasons on the major-league roster rather than developing in the minors. This 1954 Topps card (#181) is his rookie card, issued during that mandated big-league apprenticeship. A second baseman and utility man, Roach appeared in 227 games across parts of eight seasons for the Braves (1953–54, 1957–61), Chicago Cubs (1961) and Philadelphia Phillies (1962), batting .238 with 119 hits, 7 home runs and 43 RBI. With aging Red Schoendienst ahead of him, Roach was in line to claim the Braves' second-base job — and was hitting .309 in 1958 — when Giants shortstop Daryl Spencer slid hard into him at second on August 3, badly tearing his left knee and derailing a promising career. He later became a Richmond banking-group president and was inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in 1988.
