About Wes Westrum

A "superb defensive receiver" signed off the Minnesota sandlots, Wes Westrum began pro ball with the Class D Crookston Pirates in 1940 while still in high school and reached the majors after the New York Giants acquired his contract from the Minneapolis Millers. A catcher for all 11 of his big-league seasons (1947-1957), he became the Giants' regular in 1950, when he set a National League record with a .999 fielding percentage. He was an NL All-Star in 1952 and 1953 and caught every game of both the 1951 World Series (a loss to the Yankees) and the 1954 World Series, the latter a Giants sweep of Cleveland for the championship. Though he hit only .217 for his career (503 hits, 96 home runs, 315 RBI over 919 games), his sharp batting eye produced a .400 on-base percentage in 1951. He caught more games than any player in Giants franchise history and later managed the New York Mets (1965-1967) and San Francisco Giants (1974-1975).
