About Don Liddle
Don Liddle (1925-2000), a left-handed pitcher from Mount Carmel, Illinois, was signed out of the region by the Boston Braves organization (scouted by Bob Coleman) before the 1947 season and went 80-50 with a 3.40 ERA over a long minor-league apprenticeship. He reached the majors with the Milwaukee Braves in 1953, then was dealt to the New York Giants after the season, arriving alongside Johnny Antonelli in the trade that sent 1951 pennant hero Bobby Thomson to Milwaukee. Liddle is immortalized for a single pitch: in Game 1 of the 1954 World Series he served up the deep drive to Cleveland's Vic Wertz that Willie Mays ran down with his back to the plate for "The Catch." Relieved immediately after retiring his lone batter, Liddle famously quipped, "Well, I got my man." He also started and won the decisive Game 4, going 6⅔ innings and allowing just one earned run as the Giants swept for the title. This card #225 is his official Topps rookie card. Over four seasons (1953-1956) with the Braves, Giants and Cardinals he went 28-18 with a 3.75 ERA and 198 strikeouts in 117 games.
