About Dick Weik
Richard Henry "Legs" Weik (1927-1991) was a hard-throwing but famously wild right-handed pitcher, and the first player from Waterloo, Iowa, to reach the major leagues. Signed as a teenager, the lanky 6-foot-3 Weik walked 15 batters in his first professional game in 1946, a preview of the control troubles that defined his career. He debuted with the Washington Senators and pitched in the majors across five seasons (1948-1954) for the Senators, Cleveland Indians, and Detroit Tigers, working as both a starter and reliever. Over 76 games (26 starts) he went just 6-22 with a 5.90 ERA and 123 strikeouts, issuing a staggering 237 walks in only 213.2 innings (a 2.06 WHIP) - he walked ten or more in four of his 26 starts. His most notable footnote came on June 14, 1950, when Washington traded him straight up to Cleveland for two-time AL batting champion Mickey Vernon. This 1954 Topps card, issued in his final big-league season, is his lone Topps rookie card.
