About Schoolboy Rowe
The 1954 Topps card pictures Lynwood Thomas "Schoolboy" Rowe as a Detroit coach — his real role that year, when he served as the Tigers' first-base coach (1954-55) after a 15-season pitching career. Born in Waco, Texas (1910) and raised in El Dorado, Arkansas, the right-hander earned his nickname as a boy holding his own against older players; he signed with Detroit's Beaumont farm club and reached the majors in 1933. In 1934 he went 24-8 with a 16-game winning streak that tied the AL record, and in 1935 he anchored Detroit to its first World Series title, winning Game One and picking up a relief win in the Series against the Cubs. A three-time All-Star (1935, 1936, 1947) who also pitched for the Dodgers and Phillies, Rowe finished 158-101 with a 3.87 ERA and 913 strikeouts. A superb hitting pitcher, he batted .263 with 18 home runs and led the NL with 15 pinch hits in 1943. During a 1934 radio broadcast he famously asked, "How'm I doin', Edna honey?" — a line that endeared him to fans nationwide. He died in 1961 and was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame that year.
