About Johnny Pesky
Born John Michael Paveskovich in Portland, Oregon in 1919, Johnny Pesky was signed by the Boston Red Sox before the 1940 season and hit .325 in the minors at Rocky Mount and Louisville before reaching the majors. A left-handed-hitting shortstop (who also played third and second base), he made a spectacular debut in 1942, leading the American League with 205 hits and finishing third in MVP voting. After three years in the Navy during World War II, he returned to lead the AL in hits again in 1946 and 1947, topping 200 hits in each of his first three seasons, and earned his lone All-Star selection in 1946. A career .307 hitter with 1,455 hits, 17 home runs, and 404 RBI over 1,270 games, Pesky was traded to the Detroit Tigers in a nine-player deal in mid-1952 and spent 1952-54 there before finishing with Washington in 1954, the era of this card. Nicknamed "Pesky" after sportswriters shortened his surname to fit box scores and later "Mr. Red Sox," he lends his name to "Pesky's Pole," Fenway Park's right-field foul pole. A close teammate and friend of Ted Williams, Bobby Doerr, and Dom DiMaggio, he later managed and coached the Red Sox; Boston retired his No. 6 in 2008.
