About Bob Hofman

Robert "Bobby" Hofman (1925-1994), listed as "Bob Hofman" on this card, was a St. Louis-born, right-handed utilityman signed by New York Giants scout Gordon Maguire, who broke in with Class D Springfield in 1944 before Army service in the European Theater during World War II. He spent his entire seven-season major-league career (1949, then 1952-57) with the Giants, bouncing among second base, first base, third base, and catcher under managers Leo Durocher and Bill Rigney. A prized right-handed pinch-hitter, he hit .371 (13-for-35) off the bench in 1953 and tied for the NL lead with three pinch-hit home runs in both 1953 and 1954, including a walk-off shot on May 12, 1954. He was on the Giants' 1954 world-championship roster but never appeared in that World Series, as Durocher leaned on Dusty Rhodes. Hofman batted .248 with 32 home runs and 101 RBI over 341 games, later coaching 12 American League seasons and earning a second ring as an Oakland A's coach in 1974. A St. Louis boyhood and American Legion teammate of Yogi Berra, he was elected to no Hall of Fame.
