1954 Topps #74 Bill Taylor

About Bill Taylor
A left-handed-hitting, left-handed-throwing outfielder listed at 6-foot-3, William Michael "Bill" Taylor signed with the Pacific Coast League's Oakland Oaks in 1947 before the New York Giants acquired him during the 1950 minor-league season. He climbed through the Giants' farm system, posting a standout 1953 at Double-A Nashville (.350 with 22 home runs in 107 games) that earned a promotion to Triple-A Minneapolis. Taylor reached the majors in 1954, spending the full year with the National League champion Giants primarily as a pinch hitter and backup outfielder; he was on the roster when New York swept Cleveland in the World Series but did not appear in the Series. This 1954 Topps card, issued during that championship season, is his rookie card. Over five seasons (1954-1957 with the Giants, 1957-1958 with the Detroit Tigers) he played 149 games, batting .237 with 41 hits, 7 home runs, and 26 RBI. In the Venezuelan Winter League he was the first player to hit three home runs in a single game and set a season record with 16 homers, part of a long minor-league career (1,261 games, .311, 186 home runs) that stretched to 1961. Born in Alhambra, California in 1929, he died in 2011.
