About Larry Jansen

A right-handed pitcher from Verboort, Oregon, Larry Jansen starred in the minors before reaching the majors, most famously winning 30 games with a Pacific Coast League-record 1.57 ERA for the 1946 San Francisco Seals. The New York Giants purchased him, and as a 27-year-old rookie in 1947 he went 21-5, led the National League in winning percentage (.808), and finished second to Jackie Robinson for Rookie of the Year. Jansen spent nine big-league seasons, mostly with the Giants (1947-1954) plus a final year with the Cincinnati Redlegs in 1956, going 122-89 with a 3.58 ERA and 842 strikeouts. A two-time All-Star (1950-1951) who twice won 20 games, he was the winning pitcher in the October 3, 1951 playoff game decided by Bobby Thomson's "Shot Heard 'Round the World." Teammate Monte Irvin dubbed him the Giants' "Meal Ticket" for his consistency. Arm trouble limited him during the Giants' 1954 World Series title season, and he later served as San Francisco's pitching coach (1961-1971), mentoring future Hall of Famers Juan Marichal and Gaylord Perry.
