1954 Topps #170 Jim Rhodes

About Jim Rhodes
James Lamar "Dusty" Rhodes was a left-handed-hitting outfielder and pinch-hitter who, after Navy service in World War II, signed to play in the minors and reached the New York Giants in 1952. He spent his entire seven-year major-league career (1952-57 and 1959) with the Giants, batting .253 with 54 home runs, 207 RBIs, and 296 hits over 576 games. His card, part of the 1954 Topps third series, is his rookie card and captures him on the eve of the season that made him a legend. In 1954 Rhodes hit .341 with 15 homers and 50 RBIs in only 164 at-bats, and he then wrecked the World Series: coming off the bench in the Giants' four-game sweep of the heavily favored Cleveland Indians, he went 4-for-6 with two home runs and seven RBIs. His signature blow was a walk-off pinch-hit homer off future Hall of Famer Bob Lemon in the 10th inning of Game 1 at the Polo Grounds. Scout Bruce Hayes tagged him "Dusty" simply because ballplayers named Rhodes were traditionally called Dusty. Manager Leo Durocher rated him among the best pinch-hitters he ever saw. Rhodes later worked New York tugboats for 25 years and died in 2009 at age 82.
