About Don Mueller
Donald Frederick Mueller (1927-2011) was a left-handed-hitting right fielder signed by the New York Giants as a 17-year-old out of St. Louis in 1944 - the son of Walter Mueller, a Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder of the 1920s. After debuting in 1948, he spent ten seasons with the Giants (1948-1957) before closing out his 12-year career with the Chicago White Sox (1958-1959). A pure contact hitter, Mueller was nicknamed "Mandrake the Magician" by sportswriters around 1950 for his knack of stroking base hits through holes in the infield. He batted over .300 for three straight years (1953-1955) and earned back-to-back All-Star selections in 1954 and 1955. In 1954 he led the National League with 212 hits and hit .342, finishing second in the batting race to teammate Willie Mays (.345). That October he hit .389 in the Giants' four-game World Series sweep of Cleveland, his Game 3 groundball considered a key blow. In the 1951 pennant playoff he singled ahead of the Giants' ninth-inning rally but tore ankle tendons sliding into third and watched from the clubhouse as Bobby Thomson hit the "Shot Heard 'Round the World," costing him the World Series. He retired with a .296 average, 1,292 hits, 65 home runs, and 520 RBI over 1,245 games.

White Back / Gray Back Series 1 (cards 1-50)
Every card in the first series exists with the standard white/cream back (United States) and a scarcer gray back printed for the Canadian market. The grays were printed in Canada on a darker, gray cardstock and distributed in Canadian nickel packs; they exist for cards 1-50 only and carry a small-to-moderate premium. This is the genuine 'Canadian' issue from which the 1952 Topps gray-back 'Canadian' myth mistakenly borrowed its name.
- White Back: Standard United States issue. White/cream card stock - the common back for cards 1-50.
- Gray Back — scarcer: The Canadian printing. Printed in Canada on a visibly gray/darker cardstock and distributed in Canadian packs; exists for the first series (#1-50) only. Scarcer than the white back and carries a premium - modest on commons, meaningful on the stars (Williams, Robinson, Spahn, Snider, Ford, Berra, etc.). Tell: the back stock is uniformly gray - not to be confused with edge-toning on a white back.
