About Willie Jones
Willie Edward "Puddin' Head" Jones (1925-1983), born in Dillon, South Carolina, was the finest-fielding National League third baseman of the 1950s. A Navy veteran of World War II, he was signed by the Philadelphia Phillies in late 1946 after impressing scouts in semipro ball, reached the majors in 1947, and became the Phillies' entrenched third baseman from 1949 through 1959. He was a key member of the 1950 "Whiz Kids," the surprise NL pennant winners, posting career highs that year of 25 home runs, 88 RBIs, and 163 hits before the club was swept by the Yankees in the World Series. A two-time All-Star (1950-1951), Jones led NL third basemen in fielding percentage six times and in putouts for seven seasons, drawing praise from Hall of Famers Robin Roberts and Pie Traynor. He closed his 15-year career with brief stops in Cleveland and Cincinnati (1959-1961), finishing at .258 with 190 home runs and 812 RBIs over 1,691 games. His nickname came from a 1930s popular song; in 1969 fans voted him the Phillies' all-time third baseman. This 1954 Topps card (#41) captures him at the peak of his run as Philadelphia's steady hot-corner anchor.

Variations & how to tell them apart
White Back / Gray Back Series 1 (cards 1-50)
Every card in the first series exists with the standard white/cream back (United States) and a scarcer gray back printed for the Canadian market. The grays were printed in Canada on a darker, gray cardstock and distributed in Canadian nickel packs; they exist for cards 1-50 only and carry a small-to-moderate premium. This is the genuine 'Canadian' issue from which the 1952 Topps gray-back 'Canadian' myth mistakenly borrowed its name.
- White Back: Standard United States issue. White/cream card stock - the common back for cards 1-50.
- Gray Back — scarcer: The Canadian printing. Printed in Canada on a visibly gray/darker cardstock and distributed in Canadian packs; exists for the first series (#1-50) only. Scarcer than the white back and carries a premium - modest on commons, meaningful on the stars (Williams, Robinson, Spahn, Snider, Ford, Berra, etc.). Tell: the back stock is uniformly gray - not to be confused with edge-toning on a white back.
