1954 Topps #78 Ted Kazanski

About Ted Kazanski
A slick-fielding middle infielder from Hamtramck, Michigan, Theodore Stanley Kazanski (born January 25, 1934) was one of the most highly rated schoolboy players of his era, signing with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1951 for a reported $100,000 bonus. After more than two seasons in the Phillies' farm system, the 19-year-old debuted in July 1953 with a memorable splash: batting from the top of the order at Wrigley Field, he went 3-for-6 and drove in four runs in a 13-2 rout of the Cubs, becoming the first shortstop since RBI became an official stat in 1920 to knock in at least four runs in his major-league debut. He spent his entire six-year MLB career (1953-1958) with Philadelphia, seeing time at both shortstop and second base. In his best year, 1956, he hit an inside-the-park grand slam and started a triple play in the same game. Over 417 games he batted .217 with 14 home runs and 116 RBI. After more years in the minors he retired following the 1964 season and later coached in the Detroit Tigers organization and at the University of Detroit Mercy. This 1954 Topps #78 is a card from his rookie years with the Phillies.
