About Thornton Kipper
Thornton John Kipper was a right-handed pitcher born September 27, 1928, in Bagley, Wisconsin. He attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, interrupting his studies for a peacetime stint in the U.S. Navy (1946-1948), then starred for the Badgers, going 11-1 in 1950 with two victories in the College World Series before earning a spot on the All-Star team. After graduating in 1951, he was signed by the Philadelphia Phillies. Kipper spent his entire three-season major-league career with the Phillies (1953-1955), debuting June 7, 1953. He worked mostly in relief, posting a 3-4 record with a 5.27 ERA, 35 strikeouts, one save, and three starts across 55 appearances and 99.0 innings. This 1954 Topps card is his rookie card. After his big-league days he pitched in the Kansas City Athletics minor-league chain and in Venezuela's winter league, then settled in Scottsdale, Arizona, where he ran a pizza business until his death on March 29, 2006.
