1954 Topps #169 Jim Hughes

About Jim Hughes
James Robert "Jim" Hughes was a hard-throwing right-handed relief pitcher born March 21, 1923, in Chicago. A U.S. Marine who served in the Pacific during World War II, he began pro ball in 1946 and starred for the Dodgers' Triple-A Montreal Royals before debuting for Brooklyn on September 13, 1952, at age 29. Working almost exclusively in relief, Hughes reached the majors in six seasons (1952–1957) with the Brooklyn Dodgers, Chicago Cubs (1956), and Chicago White Sox (1957). His signature year was 1954, when he led the National League with 24 saves and tied for the league lead with 60 games pitched, setting a Brooklyn franchise saves record. He also pitched four strong relief innings (one run, three strikeouts) in Game 1 of the 1953 World Series against the Yankees. Over 172 games he went 15–13 with a 3.83 ERA, 39 saves, and 165 strikeouts. Nicknamed a "Fireman" for his bullpen work, he became a literal Chicago firefighter after baseball. Note: this card's back carries a birthdate error (UER).
