About Gil Hodges

Signed by the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1943 after leaving Saint Joseph's College, Gil Hodges made a brief debut that year, then served in the Marine Corps in World War II (earning a Bronze Star with Combat "V" at Okinawa) before returning in 1947. The powerful, sure-handed first baseman spent his 18-year career almost entirely with the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers (1943, 1947-1961), closing out with the expansion New York Mets (1962-1963). An eight-time All-Star, he won the first three Gold Gloves ever awarded at first base (1957-1959) and was a cornerstone of Brooklyn's fabled "Boys of Summer." On August 31, 1950, he hit four home runs in one game against the Boston Braves. He helped the Dodgers to World Series titles in 1955 (Brooklyn) and 1959 (Los Angeles), batting .273 with 1,921 hits, 370 home runs, and 1,274 RBI over 2,071 games. Nicknamed the "Gentle Giant" for his imposing frame and quiet, dignified manner, Hodges later managed the 1969 "Miracle Mets" to a stunning championship. He died of a heart attack in 1972 at age 47, and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2022.
