About Junior Gilliam
James William "Junior" Gilliam broke into pro ball with the Negro leagues' Baltimore Elite Giants in 1946, earning the nickname "Junior" at 16 as the club's youngest player; manager George "Tubby" Scales made him a switch-hitter. Brooklyn bought his contract for $4,000, and after two seasons at Triple-A Montreal (1952 International League MVP), the second baseman debuted April 14, 1953, taking over the position from Jackie Robinson. He was named 1953 NL Rookie of the Year, leading the majors with 17 triples and drawing 100 walks. Gilliam played all 14 of his big-league seasons (1953-1966) for the Dodgers in Brooklyn and Los Angeles, a versatile leadoff man who also moved to third base. A two-time All-Star (1956, 1959), he won four World Series titles (1955, 1959, 1963, 1965) in seven Series, and made the key defensive play in Game 7 of 1965 to preserve Koufax's shutout. He batted .266 with 2,021 hits, 65 home runs, 625 RBI, and 219 stolen bases. He later coached for Los Angeles; after his death in 1978 at age 49, the Dodgers retired his No. 19.

White Back / Gray Back Series 1 (cards 1-50)
Every card in the first series exists with the standard white/cream back (United States) and a scarcer gray back printed for the Canadian market. The grays were printed in Canada on a darker, gray cardstock and distributed in Canadian nickel packs; they exist for cards 1-50 only and carry a small-to-moderate premium. This is the genuine 'Canadian' issue from which the 1952 Topps gray-back 'Canadian' myth mistakenly borrowed its name.
- White Back: Standard United States issue. White/cream card stock - the common back for cards 1-50.
- Gray Back — scarcer: The Canadian printing. Printed in Canada on a visibly gray/darker cardstock and distributed in Canadian packs; exists for the first series (#1-50) only. Scarcer than the white back and carries a premium - modest on commons, meaningful on the stars (Williams, Robinson, Spahn, Snider, Ford, Berra, etc.). Tell: the back stock is uniformly gray - not to be confused with edge-toning on a white back.
