1954 Topps #124 Marion Fricano

About Marion Fricano
Marion John Fricano (1923-1976), a right-handed pitcher born in Brant, New York and raised in North Collins, signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947 after a Navy hitch in World War II and a brief stint at Cortland State. He went 66-33 over five seasons in the Dodgers' farm system before Philadelphia acquired him, reaching the majors with the Athletics in 1952. Fricano pitched four big-league seasons (1952-1955) for the Philadelphia and, in their final year, Kansas City Athletics, appearing in 88 games (43 starts) with a 15-23 record, a 4.32 ERA, 115 strikeouts and two saves; his best year was 1953 (9-12, 3.88). He is remembered for two 1954 moments: on August 27 he beaned former teammate Cass Michaels, fracturing his skull and effectively ending Michaels' career, and on September 26 at Yankee Stadium he threw the last pitch in Philadelphia Athletics history, earning a save before the franchise moved to Kansas City. After baseball he taught school in Angola, New York and served as North Collins Town Supervisor. This card is a standard Series 3 issue with no error or rookie designation.
