1954 Topps #229 Bob Talbot

About Bob Talbot
Robert Dale Talbot (June 6, 1928 - October 31, 2017) was a right-handed-hitting, right-handed-throwing outfielder from Visalia, California, who reached the majors with the Chicago Cubs after coming up through their Pacific Coast League affiliate, the Los Angeles Angels. A hometown product who played for the Visalia Cubs in 1946 and 1947, he debuted on September 16, 1953 - the same September that future Hall of Famer Ernie Banks broke in with Chicago - and spent two seasons (1953-1954) in the big leagues, primarily in center field. Over 122 games he batted .247 with 107 hits, 1 home run, 19 RBI, and 4 stolen bases before injuries derailed his career and returned him to the minors. This 1954 Topps card (#229) is his rookie card and captures him during his brief Cubs tenure. Talbot was later honored as a member of the inaugural California League Hall of Fame class in 2016, a year before his death in his native Visalia at age 89.
