About Grady Hatton

A left-handed-hitting infielder from Beaumont, Texas, Grady Hatton starred at the University of Texas (1941-43), leading the Longhorns to Southwest Conference titles and earning All-SWC honors at third base and shortstop before being inducted into the school's Hall of Honor in 1967. After serving in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II, he reached the majors in 1946 with no minor-league experience, going 3-for-5 with two RBI in his debut and becoming the Cincinnati Reds/Redlegs' regular third baseman for six seasons. He was named to the National League All-Star team in 1952, though he did not appear in the game. Over 12 seasons (1946-1960) with the Reds, White Sox, Red Sox, Cardinals, Orioles, and Cubs, the 5-foot-8 infielder batted .254 with 1,068 hits, 91 home runs, and 533 RBI in 1,312 games. He later managed the Houston Astros (1966-68) to a 164-221 record while also serving as a club vice president and co-general manager. Hatton died in 2013 at age 90.
