About Bob Kennedy
Robert Daniel Kennedy (1920-2005), a Chicago native, signed with his hometown White Sox in 1937 and debuted in 1939. A line-drive hitter with a strong, accurate arm, he played primarily third base and right field over 16 major-league seasons for the White Sox (1939-42, 1946-48, 1955-57), Cleveland Indians (1948-54), Baltimore Orioles (1954-55), Detroit Tigers (1956), and Brooklyn Dodgers (1957). Kennedy was a Marine aviator and flight instructor in World War II - training Ted Williams at Pensacola - and one of only four big-leaguers (with Williams, Jerry Coleman, and Lloyd Merriman) recalled to fly again in the Korean War. Traded to Cleveland in June 1948, he batted .301 as a part-timer for that season's World Series champions, his lone title. He hit .254 with 1,176 hits, 63 home runs, and 514 RBI across 1,483 games, and holds the odd distinction of making the final out in Brooklyn Dodgers history on September 29, 1957. He later managed the Cubs and Athletics and served as the Cubs' general manager. His 1954 Topps card (#155) shows him with Cleveland, though he was dealt to Baltimore that year.
