About Al Smith

Alphonse Eugene "Fuzzy" Smith (1928-2002) was a versatile outfielder and third baseman who broke in with the Negro Leagues' Cleveland Buckeyes in 1946 before the Cleveland Indians signed him in 1948 (scout Laddie Placek). After stops at Wilkes-Barre, San Diego (PCL), and Indianapolis, he debuted July 10, 1953, and played 12 major-league seasons for the Indians (1953-57, 1964), Chicago White Sox (1958-62), Baltimore Orioles (1963), and Boston Red Sox (1964). A two-time All-Star (1955, 1960), Smith batted a career-best .306 with 22 homers in 1955, leading the AL in runs, plate appearances, and games. He was an everyday star on Cleveland's 111-win 1954 pennant winner and reached the World Series again with the 1959 White Sox. His career line: .272 average, 1,458 hits, 164 home runs, and 676 RBI over 1,517 games. Nicknamed "Fuzzy" back in high school, Smith is immortalized by the famous Game 2 photo of the 1959 Series, when a fan spilled beer over his head as he tracked a Charlie Neal home run. This 1954 Topps card, from his rookie season, is his true rookie card.
