About Wilmer Mizell

Signed by the St. Louis Cardinals in 1949 after scout Buddy Lewis handed him $500 on his high school graduation day, Wilmer Mizell (1930-1999) became a hard-throwing left-handed pitcher who reached the majors in 1952. He pitched for the Cardinals (1952-53 and, after two years of military service, 1956-60), the Pittsburgh Pirates (1960-62), and the New York Mets (1962). Over nine seasons he went 90-88 with a 3.85 ERA and 918 strikeouts in 268 games (230 starts, 61 complete games, 15 shutouts). He was a two-time National League All-Star in 1959, when two All-Star Games were played, and won a World Series ring with Pittsburgh's 1960 champions, though he pitched sparingly in the Series. Raised near Vinegar Bend, Alabama, he carried that town's name as his nickname, popularized by broadcaster Harry Caray, though this card lists his given name, "Wilmer Mizell." After baseball he served three terms as a Republican U.S. Congressman from North Carolina (1969-75), helping to protect the New River from a dam project.
