1954 Topps #250 Ted Williams
1954 Topps #250 Ted Williams
Card #250 and the second Ted Williams card, closing the set. Long thought the tougher of the two Williams cards; a bright-yellow background makes print defects easy to spot.

About Ted Williams
Widely regarded as the greatest pure hitter in baseball history, Theodore Samuel Williams was born in San Diego in 1918 and signed with the hometown Pacific Coast League Padres while still in high school before joining the Boston Red Sox. A left-handed left fielder, "The Kid" (dubbed by Red Sox equipment manager Johnny Orlando) played 19 seasons for Boston (1939-1942, 1946-1960), his career interrupted twice by military service as a Marine aviator in World War II and Korea. In 1941 he batted .406, the last major-leaguer to top .400. He won two AL MVP awards (1946, 1949), six batting titles, and the Triple Crown twice (1942, 1947), and was named to 19 All-Star teams. Nicknamed the "Splendid Splinter" and "Teddy Ballgame," he retired with a .344 average, 521 home runs, 1,839 RBI, 2,654 hits, and the all-time-record .482 on-base percentage, homering in his final at-bat on September 28, 1960. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1966 on the first ballot. This #250 card, a bright-yellow-backgrounded second Williams card, bookends the 1954 set (he also holds #1).
