About Bill Glynn

William Vincent "Bill" Glynn (1925–2013), a left-handed-hitting, left-throwing first baseman from Sussex, New Jersey, was a World War II U.S. Army veteran who began his pro career in 1946. He debuted with the Philadelphia Phillies as a September 1949 call-up, then reached Cleveland after a stint with the Pacific Coast League's Sacramento Solons, playing for the Indians from 1952 to 1954. Over four big-league seasons and 310 games he batted .249 (170-for-684) with 22 doubles, 10 home runs, and 56 RBI. His signature day came July 5, 1954, at Detroit's Briggs Stadium, where he clubbed three home runs — including a grand slam off Ralph Branca — and drove in eight runs, tying the Indians' franchise single-game RBI record. He was the regular first baseman on Cleveland's storied 1954 club that won 111 games and reached the World Series, where the New York Giants swept the Tribe in four; Glynn doubled off Rubén Gómez in Game 3. On this #178 card his surname is misspelled "Gylnn" on the front, an uncorrected error that carries no price premium.
