About Ed McGhee
Warren Edward "Ed" McGhee was a right-handed-hitting outfielder born September 29, 1924, in Perry, Arkansas, who attended Arkansas State University before reaching the majors. He debuted with the Chicago White Sox on September 20, 1950, starting the season finale against the St. Louis Browns and collecting his first big-league hit, a triple off Stubby Overmire. In January 1953, McGhee went to the Philadelphia Athletics in a five-player trade that sent two-time AL batting champion Ferris Fain to Chicago, and he became the Athletics' regular center fielder that season, setting career highs with 104 games played while batting .263 with one home run. He lost the 1954 center-field job to Vic Power, then finished with the White Sox in 1954–1955. Over four seasons and 196 games he batted .246 with 124 hits, 3 home runs, and 43 RBI. This 1954 Topps card (#215) captures him during his brief Athletics tenure; McGhee died February 13, 1986, in Memphis, Tennessee.
