About Bob Buhl

A right-handed starting pitcher out of Saginaw, Michigan, Bob Buhl signed with the Boston Braves organization in 1948 after Commissioner Happy Chandler voided his earlier White Sox deal and made him a free agent. He debuted for the Milwaukee Braves in 1953 and pitched 15 big-league seasons (1953-1967) for the Braves, Chicago Cubs, and Philadelphia Phillies, going 166-132 with a 3.55 ERA and 1,268 strikeouts. Alongside Warren Spahn and Lew Burdette, Buhl formed the "Big Three" that carried Milwaukee to the 1957 World Series title over the Yankees, a season in which he went 18-7 and led the National League with a .720 winning percentage (he had also won 18 in 1956). Nicknamed the "Dodger Killer" for his mastery of Brooklyn, he made the All-Star team in 1960. He is also remembered for baseball's worst single-season hitting performance, an 0-for-70 in 1962. This card is Buhl's rookie card. He died in 2001 at age 72.
