1954 Topps #211 Don Hoak

About Don Hoak
Donald Albert Hoak, nicknamed "Tiger," was a hard-nosed right-handed third baseman who signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers organization after Navy service in World War II and reached the majors in 1954. Over 11 seasons (1954–1964) he played for the Dodgers, Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Redlegs, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Philadelphia Phillies, batting .265 with 1,144 hits, 89 home runs, and 498 RBI in 1,263 games. He won two World Series rings: with the 1955 Dodgers—starting the deciding Game 7 at third base in place of Jackie Robinson—and with the 1960 Pirates, whose championship team he anchored while finishing runner-up to teammate Dick Groat in NL MVP voting. A 1957 All-Star, Hoak was also the fielder whose 13th-inning throwing error ended Harvey Haddix's bid for a perfect game in 1959. Pirates broadcaster Bob Prince coined "Tiger" for his on-field ferocity. Hoak died of a heart attack in 1969 at age 41.
