About Bill Wilson

A right-handed-hitting center fielder from Central City, Nebraska, William Donald "Bill" Wilson entered pro ball in the minor leagues in 1947, where he built a reputation as a power hitter before reaching the majors. He debuted with the Chicago White Sox on September 24, 1950, and over four big-league seasons (1950, 1953–1955) split his time between the White Sox and the Philadelphia/Kansas City Athletics, appearing in 224 games. He batted .222 with 145 hits, 32 home runs, and 77 RBI. Wilson's signature moment came on April 12, 1955, when he hit the first home run in the Kansas City Athletics' major-league history — a solo shot off Van Fletcher in the eighth inning of the franchise's Kansas City debut at Municipal Stadium, part of a three-hit, three-run afternoon that earned him a 21-inch TV set from a local merchant. He never made an All-Star team or reached a World Series, and card #222 is his rookie card in the 1954 Topps set. Wilson died July 1, 2017, at age 88 in Roseville, California.
