1954 Topps #227 Buster Mills

About Buster Mills
Card #227 pictures Buster Mills in his role as a Boston Red Sox coach, and it captures a true baseball lifer. Born Colonel Buster Mills in Ranger, Texas in 1908, he was a multi-sport star at the University of Oklahoma—an all-Big Six quarterback who also lettered in basketball, track and baseball—and signed with Cleveland's organization after graduating with a geology degree in 1931. The right-handed outfielder debuted April 18, 1934 with the "Gashouse Gang" St. Louis Cardinals and played parts of seven major-league seasons through 1946, suiting up for the Cardinals, Brooklyn Dodgers, Red Sox, St. Louis Browns, New York Yankees and Cleveland Indians. He hit .287 with 396 hits, 14 home runs and 163 RBI over 415 games, his best year coming in 1937 when he batted .295 in 123 games for Boston. His given name "Colonel" (reportedly after a Civil War great-uncle) fittingly became "Buster." After serving in World War II, Mills turned to coaching for the Indians, White Sox, Redlegs and Red Sox, and briefly took the helm as interim manager of the 1953 Cincinnati Redlegs, going 4-4. He was never an All-Star or World Series participant, and the card correctly presents him as a coach.
