About Bob Wilson
Bobby Wilson was the little halfback who carried SMU to the top of the college football world. Playing for the Mustangs from 1933 to 1935, the 147-pounder led the Southwest Conference in scoring in both 1934 and 1935, earned All-America honors both seasons, and was a consensus first-team pick as a senior. His signature moment came late in the 1935 showdown with TCU, when he hauled in a fourth-down pass at the four-yard line and tumbled into the end zone for a 20-14 victory — remembered as the '$85,000 touchdown' because the game's revenue paid off the mortgage on SMU's new stadium. The win sent the Mustangs to the Rose Bowl, a 7-0 loss to Stanford, capping a season that brought SMU a 1935 national championship. Brooklyn drafted Wilson in the fifth round in 1936, and he played a single NFL season with the Dodgers. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1973.
