About Chub Peabody

Endicott 'Chub' Peabody anchored the Harvard line from 1939 to 1941, a 181-pound guard whose ferocious play earned him the nickname 'baby-faced assassin.' In 1941 he was the lone unanimous selection on the All-America team and won the Knute Rockne Memorial Trophy as college football's finest lineman, starring in Harvard's scoreless tie with unbeaten Navy by forcing one fumble and recovering another to snuff out two scoring threats. He went on to serve as a Navy submarine officer in World War II, earning the Silver Star aboard USS Tirante in the Pacific. Peabody was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1973, by which point he had built a second career in politics: he served as Governor of Massachusetts from 1963 to 1965, opposed capital punishment so firmly that he commuted every death sentence that reached his desk, and remained active in public life until his death in 1997.
