1955 Topps All-American #61 Charley Brickley
About Charley Brickley
Charley Brickley was early football's most famous dropkicker, a Harvard back whose right foot decided games for Percy Haughton's powerhouse Crimson teams. A consensus All-American in 1912 and 1913, he helped deliver national championships both seasons, and Harvard won all 21 games in which he appeared. His masterpiece came against Yale on November 22, 1913, when he kicked five field goals, four of them dropkicks, to score every Harvard point in a 15-5 victory, reportedly playing with a scratched eye that blurred his vision. He set a college record with 34 career field goals. Brickley later coached at Johns Hopkins and Boston College, organized the NFL's short-lived New York Brickley Giants in 1921, and drew crowds to the Polo Grounds for dropkicking exhibitions alongside Jim Thorpe long after his playing days ended.
