About Harry Newman

Harry Newman quarterbacked Michigan through one of the best three-year runs in Big Ten history, piloting the Wolverines to a 24-1-2 record and three conference titles from 1930 through 1932. As a senior he steered an unbeaten Michigan team to the 1932 national championship, scoring 31 of its 123 points himself, and swept the season's honors: unanimous All-America selection, the Douglas Fairbanks Trophy, and Helms Foundation Player of the Year. Newman jumped straight to stardom with the New York Giants, leading the NFL in passing yards and touchdown passes as a rookie in 1933 and throwing for a score in that season's narrow championship-game loss to the Bears. He finished his playing days with the Brooklyn and Rochester Tigers, then built a long business career as a Ford Motor Company executive and automobile dealer. Newman was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1975.
