About Bennie Oosterbaan

Bennie Oosterbaan gave Michigan a lifetime of excellence. An end from 1925 to 1927, he was a three-time All-American — the receiving half of the celebrated passing combination with quarterback Benny Friedman — who led Big Ten football in scoring as a sophomore, helped hold Red Grange and Illinois to a 3-0 shutout in 1925, and threw three touchdown passes in the 1927 game that dedicated Michigan Stadium. Nine varsity letters in football, basketball, and baseball marked him as perhaps the school's finest all-around athlete, and as a senior he led the conference in basketball scoring and baseball batting average. He never really left Ann Arbor: after two decades as an assistant he became head football coach in 1948, won the national championship in his first season, added a 1951 Rose Bowl victory, and finished 63-33-4 through 1958. Oosterbaan was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1954.
