About Germany Schulz
Adolph "Germany" Schulz was a giant for his day at 6-foot-4 and around 245 pounds, and Michigan had never seen a center like him. Playing for Fielding H. Yost in 1904-05 and 1907-08, Schulz changed the position twice over: he is credited with introducing the spiral snap, and on defense he dropped back off the line as a roving center — a move remembered as the birth of the linebacker. Michigan went 32-4-1 across his four seasons, and he was a consensus All-American in 1907. Grantland Rice called him "the fastest giant who ever played football," and an Associated Press poll later placed him at center on its all-time All-America team. Schulz went on to coach at Michigan, Wisconsin, Kansas State and Tulane, and spent 1923 as head coach at Detroit. He stood among the charter inductees of the College Football Hall of Fame in 1951, the year he died.
