1955 Topps All-American #88 Ralph Kercheval

About Ralph Kercheval
Ralph Kercheval was Kentucky's kicking and punting marvel of the early 1930s, a three-year backfield letterman from 1931 through 1933. He earned first-team All-SEC honors in the conference's inaugural 1933 season, set league punting marks that included a 52-yard single-game average against Cincinnati, and was later named the placekicker on the Associated Press all-time Southeast team covering 1920 to 1969. Kercheval spent seven NFL seasons, 1934 through 1940, as a running back and punter for the Brooklyn Dodgers. Raised in Kentucky horse country with a degree in animal husbandry, he built a distinguished second career in the thoroughbred industry as a breeder, trainer and farm manager, running Alfred Vanderbilt's Sagamore Farm when the great Native Dancer was foaled there in 1950 and later serving as president of the Thoroughbred Club of America. When he died in 2010 at 98, he was believed to be the NFL's oldest living former player.
