About Marshall Goldberg
Marshall "Biggie" Goldberg carried Pittsburgh's golden age on his back, leading the nation with 886 rushing yards in his first varsity season of 1936 and piling up a school-record 1,957 yards through 1938. Pitt went 25-3-2 in his three seasons, winning the Rose Bowl over Washington and claiming the 1937 national championship. A consensus All-American at halfback in 1937, Goldberg moved to fullback in 1938 so the celebrated "Dream Backfield" — with Dick Cassiano, John Chickerneo and Curly Stebbins — could take the field together, and he was consensus All-America again, finishing second to Davey O'Brien in the Heisman voting after placing third the year before. With the Chicago Cardinals from 1939 to 1943 and 1946 to 1948, around Navy service in World War II, he starred as a two-way back and helped win the 1947 NFL championship. He entered the College Football Hall of Fame in 1958 and later ran the Chicago-area machine-tools company that bore his name.
