About Joe Donchess

Joe Donchess anchored end for Jock Sutherland's late-1920s Pittsburgh powerhouses and earned All-America recognition in all three varsity seasons, rising from second-team notice in 1927 to first-team honors in 1928 and unanimous All-America selection in 1929, when the unbeaten Panthers claimed a share of the national championship. His Pitt teams reached the Rose Bowl twice, falling narrowly to Stanford after the 1927 season and to Southern California two years later. Football was never the whole story: Donchess pursued medicine after leaving the game and built a distinguished second career as a surgeon, becoming assistant chief surgeon for U.S. Steel in 1937 and serving as the corporation's chief surgeon from 1943 until his retirement in 1965. Fifty years after his last game for the Panthers, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1979.
