About Bruiser Kinard
Frank Kinard was called Bruiser from the day he flattened a teammate in a high-school scrimmage, and the name followed him through one of the great careers in Southern football. A sixty-minute tackle at Ole Miss from 1935 through 1937, he became the first player from any Mississippi school to earn first-team All-America honors, doing it in both 1936 and 1937, and he helped carry the Rebels to the Orange Bowl, a 20-19 heartbreaker against Catholic University. Though undersized for the line, Kinard was an All-NFL selection year after year with the Brooklyn Dodgers from 1938 through 1944, and after Navy service he joined the AAFC's New York Yankees, becoming the first man to earn all-league honors in both circuits. He later spent more than two decades as an Ole Miss line coach and became athletic director. A charter College Football Hall of Fame inductee in 1951, he entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1971.
