About Cotton Warburton
Irvine "Cotton" Warburton packed championship speed into a 5-foot-7, 145-pound frame, winning California's schoolboy quarter-mile title before arriving at USC. As the Trojans' quarterback from 1932 through 1934, he became the most publicized open-field runner of his day, steering teams that went 20-1-1 across 1932-33 — a stretch that included the 1932 national championship and a winning streak that reached 27 games. His elusive running earned unanimous All-America honors in 1933, when he led USC in rushing and scoring while averaging better than four yards a carry. When football ended, Warburton traded the gridiron for the cutting room, spending nearly two decades at MGM before joining Walt Disney Studios, where his work on Mary Poppins won the 1964 Academy Award for film editing. Few All-Americans ever matched that second act. The College Football Hall of Fame inducted him in 1975.
