About Alex Wojciechowicz

Alex Wojciechowicz anchored one of college football's most storied lines as Fordham's center from 1935 through 1937, the pivot of the famed "Seven Blocks of Granite" front that also included a young guard named Vince Lombardi. A two-time consensus All-American in 1936 and 1937, "Wojie" was hailed by coach Jim Crowley as one of the great defensive centers the game had seen. The Detroit Lions made him a first-round pick in 1938, and he won the starting center job in his very first game, playing both ways and setting a Lions record with seven interceptions in 1944. Traded to Philadelphia in 1946, he supplied veteran muscle at the heart of Eagles teams that took back-to-back NFL championships in 1948 and 1949, closing a 13-season pro career — one for every letter of his last name, as writers liked to note. He entered the College Football Hall of Fame in 1955 and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1968.
