About Eddie Dooley
Eddie Dooley quarterbacked Dartmouth during its powerhouse mid-1920s era, earning first-team All-Eastern honors in 1924 and All-America recognition before graduating in 1927. Nicknamed “Death Dooley” for his competitive intensity, he went straight from the huddle to the press box, writing sports for the New York Sun from 1927 to 1938 and broadcasting football on New York radio through the 1940s while picking up a Fordham law degree. Dooley served as mayor of Mamaroneck, New York, then won three terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, representing New York's 26th district from 1957 to 1963. As chairman of the New York State Athletic Commission from 1966 to 1975, he suspended Muhammad Ali's boxing license and expanded access for women sportswriters. He died in 1982 at age 76.
