About Frank Merritt

Frank Merritt held down tackle for Army in 1942 and 1943, a 6-foot-3, 215-pound lineman who earned All-America honors both seasons and first-team All-Eastern recognition in 1943. Captain of a state-championship team at St. Cecilia High School in Englewood, New Jersey, he graduated from West Point on June 6, 1944, D-Day itself, and went on to a distinguished career as a military pilot, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, and Air Medal with five oak leaf clusters. From 1967 into the mid-1970s Merritt served as director of athletics at the U.S. Air Force Academy, work that carried him into the national athletic directors' hall of fame in 1980. He died in Clearwater, Florida in 1995, and the College Football Hall of Fame inducted him the following year, in its class of 1996.
