About Elmer Oliphant
Elmer Oliphant might be the finest all-around athlete early college football ever produced. He starred at Purdue from 1911 to 1913, winning letters in football, basketball, baseball and track, then entered West Point under the era's eligibility rules and did it all again, becoming the first Army cadet to letter in four major sports, a feat honored with a monogram created just for him. At halfback he was a consensus All-American in 1916 and 1917, played on Army's national championship teams of 1914 and 1916, and set academy records with 45 points in a single game and 125 points in the 1917 season, once even kicking a game-winning field goal against Illinois on a broken ankle. Known as Ollie, he closed his career in the young NFL with Rochester and Buffalo, leading the league in scoring in 1921. The College Football Hall of Fame inducted him in 1955.
