1955 Topps All-American #44 Ed Garbisch

About Ed Garbisch
Ed Garbisch captained two college teams, at Washington & Jefferson in 1920 and at Army in 1924, where the center and drop-kicker became one of West Point's most decorated linemen. A consensus All-American in 1922 and a first-team choice again in 1924, he saved his masterpiece for his farewell, kicking four field goals to beat Navy 12-0 in 1924 with President Coolidge in the stands. Garbisch graduated near the top of his class, and after a brief commission in the Army engineers he built a business career, returning to uniform during the Second World War as a colonel directing military construction. With his wife, Bernice Chrysler Garbisch, he assembled a collection of American naive painting more than 2,600 works strong, much of it now held by the National Gallery of Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He entered the College Football Hall of Fame in 1954.
