About Doc Blanchard
Felix “Doc” Blanchard was Mr. Inside for Army's wartime juggernaut, pounding between the tackles while running mate Glenn Davis, Mr. Outside, struck around the ends. In three seasons at fullback and linebacker from 1944 through 1946, Blanchard scored 38 touchdowns and gained 1,908 yards as the Cadets went 27-0-1 and claimed three straight national championships. A three-time All-American, he became the first junior to win the Heisman Trophy in 1945, adding the Maxwell Award and becoming the first football player honored with the Sullivan Award as the nation's top amateur athlete. Though the Pittsburgh Steelers drafted him third overall, Blanchard chose military aviation instead, flying 113 combat missions in the Vietnam War and once riding a burning jet to a safe landing rather than bail out over a village, retiring as an Air Force colonel. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1959.
